My photographic images arise from my combined interests in the aesthetic and the technical. This interest encompasses everything from documenting a world in transition to landscapes to spontaneous events. I favor large clear images to express my aesthetic. Given the limited technology of today, this mandates medium or large format cameras and slow film. This in turn requires a tripod for most situations and complicated totally manual cameras. The set-up process is slowed to a meditative crawl. To remedy this, I have modified most of my equipment and developed a methodology to achieve a greater degree of spontaneity. Technical innovation frees me to record the momentary vanishing scene. I often reverse values with internegatives or solarization, so that darks become light and lights dark. This underscores the abstract and teases the eye. I enjoy composing frames that transcend the subject. A fragment of beach becomes a series of swirling lines. Power lines cut across the geometric silhouette of buildings. I am ever alert for juxtapositions that express irony, absurdity and even poignancy. I want to invite the viewer to see the abstract everywhere; to see the beauty of spaces, divisions, shadow and light. I want the viewer to feel both tension and resolution in my compositions. |
